Module 9 - Different perspectives on the same topic

The same event can be described in different ways

Introduction

In the previous modules, we looked at how decision-making works. Now we will focus on the fact that the same event can be described in different ways.

The same event, different perspectives

One event can be described in different ways. For example:

  • One text or message may emphasise the advantages.
  • Another text or message may emphasise the problems.

Both texts or messages may be based on the same actual event. But their emphasis may be different.

What can differ?

The following may differ:

  • the selection of information,
  • the words used,
  • the order of sentences or information,
  • the tone of the text or message.

This does not mean that one text or one message is automatically untrue. It means that we must read or follow the information carefully.

Practical exercises

✍️ Practical exercise 1: Read the two short texts and answer the questions.

Text A: "The European Union has approved a new programme to support students. The programme will enable thousands of young people to study abroad. It is expected to have a positive impact on their future careers."

Text B: "The European Union has approved a new student support programme that will cost millions of euros. Critics point out that it is not certain whether it will deliver the expected results. According to critics, the European Union is incapable of making sensible decisions."

Do both texts describe the same event?

👀 Show solution
  • ✅ Yes, both texts are likely referring to the approval of the same programme.
  • ❌ No, each text refers to a different approved programme (one on student support, the other on employee support).

What information does Text A emphasise? And Text B?

👀 Show solution
  • ❌ Text A emphasises the costs and disadvantages. Text B emphasises the benefits.
  • ✅ Text A emphasises the benefits. Text B emphasises the costs and uncertainty.

Does either text contain an attack?

👀 Show solution
  • ✅ Yes, Text B contains an attack ("The European Union is incapable of making decisions").
  • ❌ No, both texts contain evaluations, but no attacks.

✍️ Practical exercise 2: Read the two short texts carefully and answer the questions.

Text A: "The European Union has approved a new climate programme. The programme aims to reduce pollution and promote modern technologies. According to its supporters, this is an important step towards protecting the environment."

Text B: "The European Union has approved a costly climate programme that could place a significant burden on the economy. Critics warn that the measures could harm ordinary citizens and drive up prices."

Do both texts describe the same event?

👀 Show solution
  • ✅ Yes, both describe the approval of a climate-focused programme.
  • ❌ No, each text refers to a different programme.

What impression does Text A create? And Text B?

👀 Show solution
  • ❌ Text A creates a rather critical and negative picture, whilst Text B creates a rather positive picture.
  • ✅ Text A creates a rather positive picture, whilst Text B creates a rather critical or cautionary picture.

Identify the words that express an evaluation:

👀 Show solution
  • ✅ "important step"
  • ❌ "environment"
  • ❌ "technology"
  • ✅ "costly"
  • ✅ "place a significant burden on"
  • ❌ "the economy"
  • ✅ "harm"
  • ❌ "critics"

Does either text contain an attack?

👀 Show solution
  • ✅ No, both texts use evaluative language, but do not attack specific individuals.
  • ❌ Yes, both texts make negative judgements and attack specific individuals.

💡 Conclusion from practical exercises

Critical thinking does not mean choosing the "right" text. It means:

  • seeing different perspectives,
  • asking question and looking for evidence,
  • comparing information.

In both texts, we find words that express some kind of evaluation.

For example:

  • "positive impact",
  • "not certain".

Such words reveal the author's attitude.

Let us remember that

  • different texts can describe the same thing in different ways,
  • it is important to read multiple sources,
  • a different perspective does not automatically mean a lie.
