Module 13 - Discussion in the online world

Calm, factual and respectful online communication

Introduction

Discussions on the internet are often more aggressive and polarised than in real life. This means that people:

  • write quickly,
  • react emotionally,
  • have stronger opinions,
  • use a more aggressive communication style.

A critical approach means being able to respond calmly and based on facts, without letting yourself be provoked. It is not a mistake to decide not to respond if someone keeps attacking you.

Why are online discussions more heated?

Because:

  • people do not see each other in person,
  • they write under the influence of emotions,
  • they want to get attention,
  • sometimes they want to provoke conflict.

Here is a great example:

What is "provocation" (trolling)?

Provocation is a comment that:

  • aims to provoke anger,
  • wants to provoke an argument,
  • is not based on facts,
  • does not provide evidence.

Such behaviour is often referred to as trolling.

How should one respond in a heated discussion?

Options:

  • "Can you give a specific example?"
  • "I'm interested in why you think that."
  • "I don't want to continue this discussion in this manner."
  • Do not respond.

You are not obliged to respond to every comment.

When to end the discussion?

How do you know when it's time to end a discussion?

  • When the other party resorts to attacks.
  • When the same statements are repeated without evidence.
  • When the discussion is going nowhere.

It is very important to be able to remain calm.

📌 Summary

  • Respect does not automatically mean agreement. Disagreement does not mean hostility.
  • Critical thinking means: being able to say "I disagree", being able to say "I don't know", being able to say "I'm done".
  • On the internet: not every comment is an argument, not every comment deserves a response, staying calm is a better solution than attacking.

Practical exercises

✍️ Practical exercise 1: Read the comments and think about them.

Comment A: "This programme can help young people."
Comment B: "Only a complete madman could write that."
Comment C: "Do you have any sources to back that up?"

Which comment contains an attack?

👀 Show solution

Comment B is an attack.

Which comment contains a question?

👀 Show solution

Comment C contains a question.

Which comment allows the discussion to continue?

👀 Show solution

Comment C allows the discussion to continue.

✍️ Practical exercise 2: Read the comment and think about it.

"This is further proof that the whole system is against ordinary people! Wake up!"

Does the comment contain specific evidence?

👀 Show solution

No.

What emotions might it evoke?

👀 Show solution

Anger, fear.

Is the aim to explain or to provoke a reaction?

👀 Show solution

Rather to provoke a reaction.

🔎 Something extra: Algorithms and the online world

On social media, you often only see a narrow range of content. You don't see all posts on social media. Platforms use algorithms. An algorithm is a programme that selects content based on:

  • what you have viewed before,
  • what you have clicked on,
  • what you have shared,
  • what interested you.

This is important to know! If you often react to strong or controversial posts, you may see more of them. The algorithm favours content that evokes emotions. This can create the impression that:

  • "everyone thinks the same way"
  • or that the world is more conflictual than it really is.

And that is dangerous! Not everything you see is the whole picture of reality. It is only a narrow selection. Never forget that.
